LEXINGTON, Neb. (KSNB) – Students at Bryan Elementary in Lexington have been collecting hygiene items to donate but before they send them off, they took their item for a lap around the lake at Plum Creek Park.
âTheyâre all working together for the same cause and they know theyâre helping someone,â said Nancy Pinedo, Lexington Public Schools Social Worker. âThey donât know who theyâre helping, but then itâs also involving physical activity and the importance of staying active but then youâre also providing help to other children in our community or other families.â
The students have been learning about hygiene, fitness and helping the community in their physical education class with their teacher, Kris Johnson.
âI told the student this morning this is one of my favorite, favorite days of my year,â said Johnson. âI love seeing the family interaction and I love seeing the students have that feeling of theyâre giving to other people who need the items, even though they donât know them and I just love seeing the excitement of what weâre doing.â
Many parents were in attendance, some watching from the sidelines while others participated in the walk with their child.
âAfter COVID I really wanted to push a family event that involved fitness and we pulled in the hygiene items because it was unique and it was something that wasnât being done in the community,â said Johnson. âI also like to promote family fitness so I feel like itâs a great thing, showing families how to be active and we invite all the families so we have a lot of people that come and participate.â
While students were just asked to bring one item, many students brought more than one.
âAs a school social worker, weâre very grateful for this event because it does help a lot of our families in the community. Weâre able to distribute to not only families but several of our students in the high school, middle school, grade level students,â said Pinedo.
